The Seminar for Media Studies of the University of Basel was founded in 2001. Since then a research group has been working on the topic "Children, Kids, young adolescents and the consumption of Media services".

Since 2000 the research group focuses on the uses of the social Web - especially social Network sites. A lot of studies have been published (see Website: medienkompetenz.unibas.ch; recent publication: The Visual Worlds of Social Network Sites, ed. by U. Autenrieth & K. Neumann-Braun, Baden-Baden: 2011). The reception studies are always linked with the analysis of the promotion of media literacy.

It is very important to coordinate the efforts to create positive contents on the Web for children. It is crucial that they get to know the Internet in a friendly not disturbing way.

Good and interesting experiences help young people to be able to use the Internet in a safe way.
